KDP Category Tree Browser — Find Your Exact Shelf

Which of the 499 Kindle categories does your book actually belong on? Walk the full tree — top-level genre, subcategory, deepest niche — with search that jumps to any node and shows its path from the root, plus an ease-of-entry score on every branch. The tree comes from the same weekly best-seller snapshot as the category scanner, so it tracks Amazon's own category structure.

Covers 499 categories and 2,854 deepest-niche nodes — data from the Oct 19, 2026 scan snapshot, updated periodically, not real-time tracking.

How to read the tree

Three levels
Top-level categories are the whole genre's list (Mystery, Romance, Nonfiction…); subcategories are niche lists under them; the deepest level splits a subcategory into its finest niches. KDP lets you pick up to three categories when publishing — one broad anchor plus two sharp niches is a common pattern, and this tree shows you all three levels in one place.
Path from the root
Search hits show their full path (Genre › Subcategory › Niche), which is exactly the mental model the KDP publishing form asks for — knowing where a shelf sits inside the tree tells you whether it pulls you toward a broad genre's audience or a narrow niche's ranking.
How to use it
Search a word from your book's topic — “romance”, “keto”, “python” — and read the hits' scores like you would on the scanner: higher means the top 20 is easier to enter, not that readers are plentiful. An empty niche with a high score is only an opportunity if readers actually search that shelf. Open the category dossier for the full evidence before committing.

Frequently asked questions

How many categories does the tree cover, and how fresh is it?

All 499 Kindle Store best-seller categories from the site's weekly snapshot — the same data behind the category scanner, with the scan window marked on the page. Nothing on the tree is estimated: names, paths, and ease-of-entry badges all come from real scans.

What does the ease-of-entry badge mean?

The same score the category scanner computes from review composition: the median review count of the top 20, the weak-competitor share, and breakout books — titles ranked top-15 with under 100 reviews. On the tree it's a quick signal for which branches deserve a closer look; the full per-category evidence lives on each category's detail page.

Why browse a tree instead of searching on Amazon?

Because KDP placement is path-exact: the category you pick decides who you're ranked against. The tree's search jumps to any node and shows its full path from the root — genre, subcategory, niche — so the category you enter at publishing time is exactly the shelf you scouted. Free, no signup.
