Kindle Category Statistics: The Landscape in Numbers

Every number below comes from one scan of all 499 Kindle Store best-seller categories (window October 19–19, 2026; 417 main-tier categories after the demand gate). No estimated search volumes, no opinions — just the composition of the charts, re-checkable on Amazon. The headline: genuinely weak competition is rare, yet breakout books still chart in most categories.

Findings

Genuinely low-competition categories are rare

Across 417 main-tier categories, 67.4% keep the weak-competitor share of their top 20 under 25%, and only 1.7% reach 50%. The pairing most “find a low-competition niche” advice assumes — a thin top 20 and a sub-100 review median — exists in 1 of 417 categories (0.2%). The typical category is a hard fight: a 828-review median in its top 20.

But breakout books still chart almost everywhere

62.8% of main-tier categories have at least one book ranked top-15 with under 100 reviews. Category-level averages hide the doors: the question that decides entry is not “is this category easy” but “is there a crack in this specific top 20” — which is what per-category dossiers exist to answer.

The median category is a fortress-grade grind

The median main-tier category pairs a 828-review median with a 15% weak-competitor share in its top 20, and 63.5% of categories sit at 500+ review medians. Entering head-first, book against book, is the expensive path.

Opportunity is a composition call, not a label

After the demand gate, categories split almost in thirds: 133 labeled opportunity, 137 mid, 147 fortress. The opportunity label is earned by composition — a review median of at least 100 plus a weak share of at least 25% — not by category size or genre fashion.

Methodology

Source: the Amazon Kindle Store best-seller charts (public best-seller pages), one full scan covering 499 categories, window October 19–19, 2026. The scan is re-run periodically; every number on this page recomputes from the current snapshot, and the snapshot date is printed at the bottom.

Scope: 499 categories scanned; 82 demoted off the main tier by the demand gate (near-zero review activity — high scores there would be false positives); 0 flagged for data-quality review. Statistics on this page cover the 417 main-tier categories.

Definitions: “top-20 weak share” = the share of a category's top-20 charting books with fewer than 100 reviews. “review median” = the median review count of that top 20, a demand proxy — not sales. “breakout book” = ranked top-15 with under 100 reviews, read as a lower bound (chart pages can undercount versus detail pages). Quadrant rules: opportunity (review median ≥100 and weak share ≥25%), fortress (weak share <15% and review median ≥500), zombie (near-empty charts — kept out of the main tier by the demand gate).

Read the numbers this way:Review counts proxy reader engagement, not sales rank or income. Chart-page counts undercount versus detail pages, so breakout thresholds are conservative. Category composition shifts between scans: treat this as a dated research scan of the charts, not a live feed.
